WASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) – Advisors to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have said there is no need to create the Disinformation Governance Council created by President Joe Biden’s administration earlier this year.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said at the time that the advice was “gross and intentionally misrepresented” and that it was not censorship or police speech.

The DHS said the advice was intended to advise the government on how to combat lies spread, for example, by foreign countries such as Russia or China, or human traffickers.

DHS said in May it was suspending the council’s activity pending a “thorough review.”
