Three players in the top 100 of the big board for the 2023 NFL Draft

Syracuse football had no players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, but maybe that won’t prove the same story in 2023.

Obviously, this is all just speculation at this point, as the 2022 college football season is just getting started. However, several Orange players are getting some good buzz as we look to the 2023 NFL Draft.

The ‘Cuse 2022 stanza doesn’t begin until Saturday, Sept. 3, when the team hosts Louisville, though some college football games were played last weekend.

In any case, the sports analysis company Pro Football Focus recently released their pre-season top 100 big board for the 2023 NFL Draft, and I was thrilled to see a trio of Orange players included.

They are star cornerback Garrett Williams, All-American running back Sean Tucker and stellar offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron, who was a central part of ‘Cuse’s offensive line that helped Tucker break the record for one-season run of the program in 2021. .

Let’s take a look at where Syracuse’s football stars reside on Pro Football Focus’ big 2023 NFL Draft board.

Williams, part of a formidable Orange secondary ahead of the 2022 campaign, is an All-American candidate himself this fall. Pro Football Focus has him as the No. 2 cornerback in the top 100, and Williams checks in at No. 16 overall.

In their review of Williams, Pro Football Focus said he “sadly is stuck in a pattern that isn’t set up for his numbers to be top notch. He’s got a kind of athleticism and man ability release, but he aired just 26 press man cover shots last season, racking up 13 pass breakups in two seasons for Orange.

Tucker, who has nearly 1,500 rushing yards in 2021 and is set for a monster 2022, is No. 54 overall in Pro Football Focus.

By the way, there are four running backs ahead of Tucker in this top 100. Personally, I feel like he should be No. 1 or No. 2 on this list, but that’s fine.

Last but not least, Bergeron is No.95, according to Pro Football Focus. I love seeing it and I really hope Matthew can play Sunday down the line.

According to his biography on cuse.com, he started all 12 games at left tackle a stanza ago, when Syracuse football went 5-7. In 2021, Bergeron received All-ACC honors with honorable mention.

Here’s an interesting stat I didn’t know about him before. Citing ESPN Advanced Stats, cuse.com reports that the Orange averaged four yards per carry from Bergeron’s left tackle position, which proved to be the highest total in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

As we noted around the start of June, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. at the time included both Tucker and Williams in the top 10 of his early position rankings for the NFL Draft. 2023.

We will certainly continue to watch various projections of the 2023 NFL Draft from experts, and I sincerely hope that these three football stars from Syracuse eventually find their way into the NFL.
