The reenactment of the eruption of Vesuvius in ancient Pompeii was the explosive highlight of the Roman day at Newington Primary in Ramsgate, Kent.

The 3rd grade group staged their interpretation of the fateful moments of 79 AD as part of their English studies of Christina Balit’s drama story Escape From Pompeii.

The girls and boys dressed up in their role as wealthy merchants, soldiers and commoners to play their part in the epic tale.

Their immersive adventure started creatively, making traditional-style clay pots, before visiting a market stall where they got to smell and taste aromatic spices such as ginger, turmeric and chilli powder.

Here, the students tried their luck at haggling and tried to sell their homemade pots to each other.

To set the tone for the earth-shattering volcanic eruption, teachers described a traditionally normal day in Pompeii that would soon be changed forever by the historic explosion.

The students captured the mood of the moment through a mix of evocative poetry and percussion, using instruments to create the warning rumble beneath the mountain.

The sounds rose crescendo as the tremors intensified, before finally exploding with a mighty bang and crash.

To complete their Roman adventure, the kids created their own model volcanoes and set out in the playground to fill them with diet cola and mints, which created a bubbly gushing eruption.

Rachael Philpot, Year 3 Manager, said:

“This immersive style of learning allowed the children to not only understand the context of ancient Pompeii, but also to empathize with the main characters in the story as they ‘experienced’ what it would have been like.”

The activities will help students develop their creative writing later this term when they come to write a journal entry from the perspective of one of the Pompeian characters.

Head teacher Hannah Tudor said:

“All the drama of this particular historic event has come alive vividly for Year 3 – and I look forward to enjoying their journal entries when they are complete.”
