“My job involves great personal risks.” An extraordinarily inspiring film about how just working as a journalist can change everything. Music Box Films in the US unveiled an official US trailer for the stunning, award-winning documentary film Write with fire, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. He won two awards there, including the first audience award in the World Cinema Doc section. The film is a portrait of a remarkable newspaper in India called “Khabar Lahariya” which is making waves. In a crowded news landscape dominated by men, emerges the only Indian newspaper run by Dalit women. Armed with smartphones, chief reporter Meera and her journalists are breaking traditions, whether on the frontlines of India’s biggest problems or in the confines of their own home, redefining what it means to be powerful. It’s incredible. “The astonishing determination of these local reporters as they empower each other and hold those responsible for injustice to account.” One of the best docs of the year – worth a visit.

Reporting in a social environment built to divide based on caste and gender, a group of intrepid journalists maintain India’s only female-run media outlet. The women of Khabar Lahariya (“Waves of News”) are preparing to take the newspaper from print to digital even though many of their reporters do not have access to electricity at home. Armed with smartphones, chief journalist Meera and her team of intrepid investigative journalists tackle some of India’s biggest challenges – exposing relentless discrimination against women and also amplifying the voices of those suffering from the oppressive caste system . Write with fire is directed and produced by Indian filmmakers Rintu thomas & Sushmit Gosh, both making their directorial debuts after a few other previously acclaimed shorts. This one originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and has also performed at CPH: DOX, Hot Docs, and the Seattle + San Francisco Film Festivals this year. Music Box Films will be released Write with fire in select American theaters from November 26, 2021 this autumn. For more information on debuting in the United States, visit their official site.
