Fishers Island C-19 School Show & Test Notice – FishersIsland.net

January 6, 2022

Dear community of Fishers Island:

Hope this finds you well. I am writing to let you know that a member of elementary staff tested positive this morning for COVID-19. The staff member had a quick home test before coming to school and is now beginning her period of mandatory segregation.

I contacted all close contacts of the staff member to inform them of their proximity to the HIV-positive person. If you have not heard from me after reading this letter, your student has not been exposed to this case.

As an additional precaution, we closed the K / 1 and 3 / 4th classrooms for the day to conduct the necessary contact tracing, cleaning and disinfection. All other classes are functioning normally.

We continue to strongly encourage drug testing as a primary tool to help us prevent potential exposure. As a reminder, we can offer rapid tests “at school” for anyone who would like to be tested. Contact me directly if you would like to set up testing for your child.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

At your service,

Christian

Hope this finds you well. I would like to thank you for your continued support to our school and our efforts to deal with the continuing impact of COVID-19. I know no one wanted the start of our vacation to be like this, but please know that we will continue to make decisions that put the health and safety of our entire school community first.

As of this morning, we have no further positive COVID-19 cases to report. Since our first known case on Tuesday, we’ve tested the following people through our internal rapid test program:

  • 28 students
  • 14 teachers
  • 6 staff

Testing will remain available throughout our break week to accommodate our school community and account for unknown dates of potential exposure and incubation of the virus. The school will go through a week of cleaning and disinfection to prepare for our return on January 3rd.

As a proactive measure to ensure the safety of our students and faculty / staff, we also offer pre-school COVID testing. On Sunday January 2, we will be available on the island (at the school) from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and in New London (at the ferry terminal) from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to administer Binax Quick Tests to any student or faculty member / staff who wish to receive a test.

These tests are offered free of charge to students or faculty / staff. Please email me if you would like to receive a Binax rapid test on January 2nd at either location. PCR tests are always available to order from our school doctor (please check with your insurer for billing information).

Please feel free to contact me directly if there is anything I can do to support your family during our break. I can be reached on my cell phone at 631-357-4692.

I wish you and your family a very happy holiday. Please stay safe and enjoy the time with your loved ones.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2022! At your service,

Christian

Dear Fishers Island School Community:

I am writing to provide an update as we have learned an additional positive test in our 5th grade class. This now brings the total to three (3) students who are all in grades 5-6.

We also learned that two of the students attended the Holiday Party at the Community Center on Monday December 20th.

The Fishers Island school can provide “rapid” antigen testing to all students and staff. Please contact me directly if you would like to set up testing anytime between now and our return to school on January 3rd.

We continue to recommend that you monitor your child daily for symptoms. If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, please:

  1. Contact their health care provider immediately.
  2. Take a COVID-19 diagnostic test and isolate yourself from others.
  3. Notify the school immediately if they test positive for COVID-19.

We will continue to provide regular updates as needed and will promptly notify you of any issues related to COVID-19 or any other health issue requiring your attention. We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Dear Fishers Island School Community:

I am writing to let our school community know that we have two students in our 6th grade who have tested positive for COVID-19.

We were informed of the first positive case this morning concerning a student who had not been present at school since Thursday, December 16. The student took the ferry at 7:00 a.m. and was sent home at 8:15 a.m. because he was not feeling well after the trip. The second case was discovered through our diagnostic tests on students in close contact before today’s early dismissal. All other students and staff who tested came back negative.

As a precaution and following our COVID reopening plan, we fired all students at 12:30 p.m. today and will switch to distance learning for Wednesday and Thursday. Our decision to switch to distance learning will give us time to contact Trace, clean / disinfect the school and provide a precautionary notice to our entire community before the next vacation.

Any student or staff member who has been identified as close contact of those diagnosed with COVID-19 will be notified of their close contact status. If you do not receive this notification, your student is NOT in close contact with those diagnosed with COVID-19. Therefore, you don’t have to quarantine yourself at home or be tested. However, we strongly recommend precautionary testing before any upcoming gathering or vacation plans.

We recommend that you continue to monitor your child every day for symptoms. If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, please:

  • Contact their health care provider immediately.
  • Take a COVID-19 diagnostic test and isolate yourself from others.
  • Notify the school immediately if they test positive for COVID-19.
  • We’ll run our typical schedule and teach high school virtually tomorrow. Elementary teachers will contact students and their families with distance plans for their classes. We will send out a program before Thursday which will be a “half day distance learning day”.

We will continue to provide regular updates as needed and will promptly notify you of any issues related to COVID-19 or any other health issue requiring your attention. We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
