CNN – A desperate note sent by a mother with her child to her elementary school has led Las Vegas-area police to the remains of a toddler.

Officers attended the home on Tuesday, where they detained boyfriend Brandon Toseland, LVMPD said.

The mother told police that Toseland abused her and would not let her out of the house alone or into the garage, the statement said. She told them the last time she saw her child, described by police as a toddler, was in December, CNN reported.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene and found the child’s remains in a freezer in the garage, the statement said.

Toseland, 35, was arrested and charged with open murder and two counts of kidnapping, the statement said.

According to police, the Clark County Coroner’s Office will identify the remains and work to determine the cause of death.
